Weekend warriors everywhere are stomping into local gear shops to cash in on the newest craze – GPS devices. After all, what’s better than merging your love of electronics with your love of the great outdoors? But do you need a pricey GPS that answers all your questions before you can formulate them, or is a workhorse GPS device that delivers standard info in a practical format better for you?
Our assessment checklist will help you sort your needs from your wants and find the right GPS device to suit your lifestyle.
Ease of use – GPS devices rarely require more than a quick study of the user’s manual. But talk to your friends and search out reviews online for which devices suit uber-techies and which ones work for trekkers with limited electronic know-how.
Talk or read? – Some GPS devices come with voice software and touch-screens, but each feature usually indicates a price increase.
Assess your needs – Car navigator devices differ from hand held units designed for outdoor adventures. If you plan to take yours on limited access highways, you’ll have little need for a unit that lists all the Taco Bells from Fort Worth to Albuquerque.
Verify compatibility – If your PC operates on outdated software, verify your new GPS software is compatible
Keep it simple – Many devices come with a lot of functions the average user doesn’t need. Make sure the unit you choose lives up to your expectations.
Plan your backup – Buy extra batteries and a charger. If you plan to hit the trails with your unit, make sure …

When you are out in the field hunting and using a GPS unit it is very helpful to have the right accessories for your GPS. It makes your GPS unit much more simple and easy to use.
1. Carrying Case – A carrying case will save your GPS from getting some scuffs and scrapes on it while hunting in the outdoors. No matter how careful you are with your GPS you are bound to drop it sometime while in a spot and stalk hunting situation or walking to your tree stand. Most durable carrying cases have a clear vinyl for protecting the display. This is also helpful to reduce glare from the display area. The carrying case also has holes in it for easy use of the operating buttons.
2. Software – You will want to get the correct mapping software for your GPS unit. Having topographic maps loaded on your GPS for the area you are hunting is extremely helpful especially in a spot and stalk situation. You can find canyons, springs, and other areas that you can check for game.
3. Lanyards or Holsters – You will want to have some form of carrying your GPS unit either with a lanyard or holster. A retractable lanyard is great for hunters because it keeps the GPS unit handy when needed yet out of the way when not in use. A holster is also a good option because it is easy to get the GPS in and out of without making a lot of noise like a belt clip and button setup.

What is the best kind of GPS system for you? This depends on what you intend to use it for.
Garmin 12 GPS is very good. There are various models of the 12, 12XL etc. They can be found for under $150. The altimeter is usually off but once you find your position, most of the time the map tells me what my altitude is. They have a pretty decent battery life since you rarely ever use your GPS for 12 hours straight.
The vendors selling GPS units are Garmin and Magellan, those are good brands and can meet your requirements quite well. There is a third player, Brunton (compass makers gone hi-tech). They make very reasonably priced GPS units with lots of bells and whistles. Garmin GPS records the distance travelled, speed, average speed, etc. Make sure you get good battery life and enough memory to be useful.
Mitac Mio 168 comes out well for my requirements but is more expensive, especially if you go for the tom tom mapping software too (voice directions when I’m out on my motorbike!)
Most of the functions on GPS of this sort you can get from a map. Maps on pure GPS are not as good as on a GPS/PDA but good maps for these are usually expensive. Some mountain rescue team members use PDAs with 1:25000 OS mapping data for recording search patterns etc.
You really need to look at your own plans – for instance, most backpackers use GPS to “confirm” their position, and …

GPS is the new wave of navigating, and motorcycle GPS is no exception. But what exactly is GPS and why would you want it on a motorcycle?
GPS stands for global positioning system. It’s a high tech way of saying that it tell you where you are on the globe, and if you’ve got a motorcycle GPS system it tells you where your motorcycle is.
A GPS, including a motorcycle GPS, works by receiving radio signals from a series of satellites that are positioned in orbit around the globe. By cross referencing these satellite signals your motorcycle GPS unit can work out, to an accuracy of around 6 meters or less, exactly where you are.
In order for your GPS to work you need to be in a location where you can pick up the radio signals from a number of different satellites so that they can be cross referenced. Too few satellites and the accuracy goes down, none, or one, and it’s useless.
Early GPS systems, whilst accurate, had limited usefulness for the motorcyclist or car driver because they gave you your position on the globe in latitude and longitude. Whilst it was accurate, it wasn’t really user friendly, because you couldn’t really use it to plot your position on a map unless you were extremely map savvy and had the resources to do so. However modern motorcycle GPS systems have advanced way beyond this, and the best motorbike GPS units have now become a total motorcycle navigation solution.
The GPS technology has been combined with modern mapping software to eliminate the problem of …

Motorcycle GPS overcomes one of the problems of comfortable motorcycle riding. Navigation. It’s not easy navigating if you’re out on a trip on your bike when you don’t know where you’re going.
Of course you carry a map on your bike, everyone needs a map. However it’s sometimes not all that easy to use a map on a good motorcycle ride. How about when it’s raining, for example? You end up sitting on the side of the road looking at a soggy map.
Motorcycle navigation has always been more difficult than navigating a car, when for example, you usually have a passenger who can just tell you when to turn left for right.
When GPS technology, or Global Positioning System technology, became available to the general public it wasn’t totally user friendly, and certainly wasn’t all that useful for a motorcycle rider.
GPS works by using signals from satellites to triangulate your position on the globe. Unfortunately with early versions of GPS that was what you got. Your position on the globe. Useful perhaps for some, but not ideal for good car or motorcycle navigation.
However over the years GPS technology has been combined with modern computer software and mapping software to turn GPS in general, and motorcycle GPS in particular, into a total navigation solution for you or I.
And there are now dedicated motorcycle GPS systems that are specifically designed to be mounted on motorcycle handlebars which offer this motorbike navigation solution at an extremely attractive price. And as it is specifically designed to be used on a motorbike the best motorcycle …

If you want to know how the TrackStick can be of use to you (and believe me it will be), read on.
The TrackStick Explained
The TrackStick is a unique little GPS device, which has the ability to record its own movement and thus that of the person or vehicle it is on. It can record the date, time, location, heading, speed, and altitude of the place it is in; thereby giving you a thorough record of its movements.
The TrackStick is not a real time GPS device, but is a passive GPS recorder. What this means is that it keeps a log of every movement it makes and the data logging can be preset at intervals of 1 minute to 15 minutes.
Dimensions and Design
At 4.1 inches by 1.2 inches by ¾ inch (length, width, and thickness), the TrackStick is quite a small unit. It is extremely simple to use as it features only one button on its side that enables you to on/off the device and also change the modes between full power …
